About ACSM

At the Amsterdam Center for Social Media (ACSM) at VU University Amsterdam we conduct academic research into the use of social media by individuals, organizations and institutions. The aim of ACSM is to gain insights into the social media choices and preferences of individuals in their roles as citizens, friends, consumers, patients or employees. Individual choices and preferences affect the presence and possibilities of organizations and institutions in social media, while on the other hand the choices of organizations and institutions affect individual behavior in social media. The interaction of organizational and individual social media choices determines the nature and development of the online social networks as we know them and is at the heart of ASCM research.

ACSM researchers present their work in prominent academic outlets such as Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Human Communication Research, Public Relations Review, Journal of Information Technology, Social Networks Analysis and Mining, European Journal of Marketing, Electronic Commerce Research and Applications, Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking, and the Journal of Service Research. ACSM researchers are affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences (Dept. Communication Science) and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (Dept. of Marketing) and the research group Knowledge, Information and Networks. All ACSM researchers are affiliated with the interfaculty Network Institute.
